Rugged Clichés on Rugby by Morganne Shelford

Women rugby teams have clearly been misjudged… The stereotypes on rugby are usually ones linked to a violent and macho game, totally inappropriate for women; nonetheless, women rugby teams are becoming better known and the sport is developing throughout the world. Why would that be?

Here is a very simple answer: because women feel the need to let go of their emotions and manage their stress. Most of the teams have a very aggressive winning spirit! The majority of the non-professional men’s rugby teams exist more for fun and friends and, as we say in France: “la troisième mi-temps”, i.e. the after-match drinking binge!

In France, it is much easier for a man to make his living playing rugby and to play in a high level team than for a woman. You guys should know why! It is simply because rugby is not considered a profession for women; the fact that they are not paid to play makes them really play for the jersey, but it also means that they have to train after a day’s work. This makes it harder for women, but the FFR is getting better at promoting women’s rugby during men’s matches and with publicity during major rugby events such as the Rugby World Cup. The French women’s rugby team did really well at the last World Cup in England in 2010 and ended up fourth behind New Zealand, England, and Australia.

There is a team I guess you don’t even know exists: the ORCA (Ovalie Romagnatoise Clermontoise Auvergne). It’s a women’s rugby team in Romagnat, Auvergne, France, that plays in Elite 2, the second best level in France, and are third of eight teams!  There is also a team for young girls that like to develop their teamwork; they have a great will to win! Feel free to come and try! For more information on this team, click on this link: http://www.orca.asso.fr/

US Olympic track & field Trials... I was there! By Coraline

During ten days, from June 22nd to July 1st 2012, at the Hayward Field in Eugene (Oregon), US athletes gunned for glory and a chance to represent the Nation at the Olympic Games.

The first US Olympic Trials were in 1920; it was only for men. The first women’s Olympic Trials were in 1928. Combined Olympic Trials have existed only since 1976.

Eugene received the US Olympic Trials this year.

Eugene was founded in 1846. There are 155,000 residents according to the United States 2010 Census. Eugene is located at the southern end of the Willamette Valley.

For nearly 40 years, Eugene has been the “track and field capital of the world”. Oregon’s most famous track icon is the late world-class distance runner Steve Prefontaine, who was killed in a car crash in 1975.

The stadium, Hayward Field, hosted the 1972, 1976, 1980, 2008 and 2012 US Olympic track & field Trials.

There are 22 track and field events: 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1500 meters, 500 meters, 10,000 meters, steeplechase, 110 hurdles, 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, high jump, race-walk, pole vault, discuss, javelin, long jump, triple jump, shotput, hammer, decathlon, and heptathlon.

The majority of these activities are combined (i.e. men and women) except the 110 hurdles and the decathlon which are male activities. The 100 hurdles and the heptathlon on the other hand are only for women.

You could follow all of the news on the TV, in the newspapers and on Internet (the official Website is www.tracktown12.gotracktownusa.com, Facebook and Twitter).

The Trials were well organized. There were many services such as free parking, a free shuttle service, and water fountains for the spectators.

After a highly successful showing during the 2008 US Olympic track & field Trials, the fan festival experience surrounding Hayward Field was even bigger this summer. You could see fifteen different bands during this festival.

During the first three days, the weather was very bad because it was raining but for the other days, the sky was fine.

This year, the principal sponsors of the US Olympic track and field Trials were Nike (which was created in Eugene), Eugene city, the State of Oregon, and the USA track & field organization.

This year 320 “hometown heroes” from all the country participated. All participants do their best to win and to become one of the athletes to represent the country.

They were much encouraged by all the spectators from all over the United States of America and, like me, even from other countries.

The US Olympic track & field trials is definitely the most important and famous Olympic Trials in the entire world.

One world record was broken, some American records, and also lots of US Olympic Trials records. Lots of athletes broke their own records.

More than eighty American athletes were selected to represent their country at the Olympic Games this year in London.

Oscar win! By Margaux

Oscar Pistorius is a South African athlete who will be taking part in the Olympic Games in London.

This sprinter lost the anterior part of both his legs when a child. He can run thanks to the carbon prostheses he is equipped with, which gave him his nickname: "Blade Runner".

Already several times medalist at the Paralympics in both Athens and Beijing (200 meters in Athens in 2004 and 100, 200 and 400 meters in Beijing in 2008) he was not able to take part in the Olympic Games in Beijing alongside able-bodied sportsmen because his prostheses were considered to give him an unfair avantage...

On July 4th 2012, Oscar Pistorius finaly qualified for the Olympic Games because his performance was below the average of able-bodied runners; he can now run the 400 meters and 4x400 meters at the London Olympics alongside able-bodied athletes.

In my opinion, it is a good thing that disabled people are not set apart in sport or indeed in everyday life. I think the Olympic Games have set a good example.

Should sportsmen be paid according to results? By Pierrick

We can legitimately ask the question considering the French national football team results... Indeed, during the Euro 2012 in Poland-Ukraine, in spite of their poor performance, the French players got a bonus of 100,000€ each! This money, which seems indecent in times of rigor, shocked the French people.

To top it all, these overpaid players totally despise their public, which is the height of stupidity because without it the players' salaries would be lower. These are just mercenaries working abroad, they have no national pride or team spirit; they do not even sing the national anthem!

To restore a decent level of play and the right spirit in French football, we should eliminate premiums, except in case of victory, and financially penalize disrespectful behavior and unmotivated teams.

Olympic Games 2012 by Valentin

The Olympic Games are taking place in London from the 27th July to the 12th August 2012. It was decided on the 6th July 2005 by the International Olympic Committe that the 2012 Olympic Games were to be held in London.

The 2012 Olympic Games are expected to bring many benefits to the UK, especially London where many areas will be redeveloped. However, there has been much criticism of the budget for the London Games.

There are new sports zones and existing facilities across the country will also be used. There are sports venues all over London, with many in well known and popular locations such as Hyde Park.

The 2012 Olympic Games Park and main stadium are in Stratford, East London. It has been a huge regeneration project.

There will be 26 sports and a total of 38 disciplines at the Games. The Paralympic Games will feature 20 sports and 21 disciplines. London’s bid actually planned for 28 sports, matching previous Summer Olympic Games, but the International Olympic Committee voted to remove both baseball and softball from this year's Games.
